Dellie Lidyard has been on the Seniors Advisory Committee for three terms.
She has served on the Transportation & Mobility Subcommittee for two terms, and is currently the Chair. She was part of the successful campaign to save the TaxiSaver program and continues to advocate for better transit service for seniors and persons with disabilities. She follows, with great interest, the progress of the proposed transit referendum and has participated in different discussions and forums around this issue on behalf of SAC.
As a past member of the Housing Subcommittee, she was involved in ongoing discussions with numerous government and non-profit agencies to promote more affordable and suitable housing for older adults. In partnership with Jill Weiss, past Chair of the Persons with Disability Advisory Committee, she was also instrumental in convincing the City to update its Building By-law to reflect the needs of seniors and persons with disabilities.
After serving for five years in the Political and Security Council Affairs of the United Nations in New York, Dellie returned to Canada in 1971 to take care of her young children. She returned to the public sector in 1980 and served in different departments and capacities as a civilian employee of the RCMP. She was elected for three consecutive terms as the Regional Vice-President (BC and Yukon) for the Union of Solicitor General Employees. For her contributions to public service, Dellie was awarded the Queen’s Golden Jubilee Medal by the Commanding Officer of the RCMP.
Since retirement, Dellie has devoted much of her time to community service. In addition to working on the SAC, she volunteers with the Seniors’ Advisory Committee at Kits Neighbourhood House, the Book’mark program at Vancouver Public Library, and the Social Justice Committee of St. Augustine’s Church, to name a few.
