Sharon Fenton is a member of the Communications and Outreach Subcommittee. Among her many duties, she arranges outreach meetings at community centres and recruits speakers to share information of interest to older adults in the community.
Sharon strongly believes that older adults should have the option to “age in place” if they wish. The SAC recently passed her motion calling on Vancouver City Council to encourage local and provincial agencies to work together in providing seamless, continuous delivery of medical and non-medical supports required by older adults who wish to remain in their homes as long as possible. Sharon continues to work with Gloria Levi, founder of Integrated Care Advocacy, to monitor the progress on this issue.
Sharon is also SAC’s liaison to the Pearson-Dogwood Redevelopment, one of Vancouver’s largest mixed-use developments, which will include healthcare, housing, and community amenities. Sharon sits on the project’s Community Advisory Group, providing input on ways the project can adequately meet the needs of older adults.
A retired teacher who has worked in numerous elementary and secondary schools in Vancouver and throughout BC, Sharon is keenly aware of the importance of community — to feel that one belongs. She brings this awareness to all her advisory work with the SAC.
This is Sharon’s second year on the Committee; she looks forward to her third year representing the interests of older adults in Vancouver.
